Lab 1B

1) The USGS map is of the Beverley Hills Quadrangle.

2) Adjacent quadrangles include Canoga Park, Burbank, Hollywood, Inglewood, Venice, Van Nuys, and Topanga.

3) The Quadrangle was created in 1983.

4) It was created using datum of imagery, roads, and names.

5) The scale is 1:24,000 meaning one centimeter on the map equals 24,000 centimeters on the ground or 240 meters.

6) Therefore, 5 centimeters on the map is 1,200 meters on the ground.

Five inches on the map is worth 24,000 inches times 5 inches which is 120,000 inches on the ground. 120,000 inches is 1.894 miles. One mile on the ground is equivalent to 2.64 inches on the map. 3 kilometers is 0.125 centimeters on the map.

7) The contour interval is 20 feet.

8) The Public Affairs building is at 34 degrees 71'36" or 34-04.472. The tip of the Santa Monica Pier is at 34-00.459 or 34degrees 64'01". 34-05.928 is the location of the Upper Franklin Canyon Reservoir which can also be written 34 degrees 73'99".

9)Approximate elevation of Crestwood Hills Park is 640 feet. Woodlawn Cemetery is at an elevation of zero feet. Finally, Greystone Mansion in Greystone Park is approximately 560 feet in elevation.

10) The UTM zone is the Universal Traverse Mercator.

11) 37 is the UTM in the lower left corner of the map.

12) UTM grids are 1000 square meters.

13) Excel spread:
68 67 71 480 440 70 380 380 in the center of campus.
14) Magnetic declination is 14 degrees.

15) Water flows South in the intermitent stream between the 405 and the Stone Canyon Reservoir.
