Lab 4

This is a map of the percentage of the population in each county who consider themselves a race other than the traditional races listed on the census. Interestingly, the highest percentages are in the South West of the continental United States. I believe that this is also the area of the US with the highest latino population. It could be that for whatever reason, many people who the census may assume to be latino do not identify with Latino as their race. It could also be that a lot of Americans in this region of the country are reproducing with Americans of a different race than themselves and therefore their children do not identify as either race.

These maps represent the percent of the total population of each country in the US that identifies itself as Asain. The Western United States have the the highest percentages. In Hawaii, California, Alaska, and Washington high percentages of the population are Asain. This makes perfect geographic sense since people immigrating to the US from Asia will have a much shorter journey if they come to the West Coast than they would if they went elsewhere in the nation.

This map is a projection of the percent of the total population of each county in the United States that identifies itself as black. The highest percentage of people who identify as members of the black race live in the American South. Outside of the South, a lot of large cities have high black populations as is apparent because the counties surrounding Los Angeles, Chicago, and Detroit have high black populations even though they are not in the South.
