Lab 4

This is a map of the percentage of the population in each county who consider themselves a race other than the traditional races listed on the census. Interestingly, the highest percentages are in the South West of the continental United States. I believe that this is also the area of the US with the highest latino population. It could be that for whatever reason, many people who the census may assume to be latino do not identify with Latino as their race. It could also be that a lot of Americans in this region of the country are reproducing with Americans of a different race than themselves and therefore their children do not identify as either race.

These maps represent the percent of the total population of each country in the US that identifies itself as Asain. The Western United States have the the highest percentages. In Hawaii, California, Alaska, and Washington high percentages of the population are Asain. This makes perfect geographic sense since people immigrating to the US from Asia will have a much shorter journey if they come to the West Coast than they would if they went elsewhere in the nation.

This map is a projection of the percent of the total population of each county in the United States that identifies itself as black. The highest percentage of people who identify as members of the black race live in the American South. Outside of the South, a lot of large cities have high black populations as is apparent because the counties surrounding Los Angeles, Chicago, and Detroit have high black populations even though they are not in the South.

Neogeography

There are many benefits and pitfalls to neogeography. In this generation of Global Positioning Satellites a lot of people never learned how to correctly use or for that matter even read a map. The concept of a Compass Rose is foreign to many people my own age and it is not their fault. Why would they ever have need to learn these things if they never have to use them. Neogeography is bringing renewed interest to maps. Maps now have a new fun and useful application that is relevant to the real world. Perhaps in the future neogeography will be merged with GPS technology more so than it is now and people will again forget about maps.
There are also negatives to neogeography. Part of what I find fun about being in a new place where some body I know lives is exploring on my own and just seeing the world they come from. The exploration and adventure aspect of being in a new place is completely lost when every place I might want to go is indicated on the map. I would rather stumble upon some hole-in-the-wall coffee joint than have the nearest Starbucks picked out for me. Neogeography has the potential to take the excitement out of traveling.

Lab 1B

1) The USGS map is of the Beverley Hills Quadrangle.

2) Adjacent quadrangles include Canoga Park, Burbank, Hollywood, Inglewood, Venice, Van Nuys, and Topanga.

3) The Quadrangle was created in 1983.

4) It was created using datum of imagery, roads, and names.

5) The scale is 1:24,000 meaning one centimeter on the map equals 24,000 centimeters on the ground or 240 meters.

6) Therefore, 5 centimeters on the map is 1,200 meters on the ground.

Five inches on the map is worth 24,000 inches times 5 inches which is 120,000 inches on the ground. 120,000 inches is 1.894 miles. One mile on the ground is equivalent to 2.64 inches on the map. 3 kilometers is 0.125 centimeters on the map.

7) The contour interval is 20 feet.

8) The Public Affairs building is at 34 degrees 71'36" or 34-04.472. The tip of the Santa Monica Pier is at 34-00.459 or 34degrees 64'01". 34-05.928 is the location of the Upper Franklin Canyon Reservoir which can also be written 34 degrees 73'99".

9)Approximate elevation of Crestwood Hills Park is 640 feet. Woodlawn Cemetery is at an elevation of zero feet. Finally, Greystone Mansion in Greystone Park is approximately 560 feet in elevation.

10) The UTM zone is the Universal Traverse Mercator.

11) 37 is the UTM in the lower left corner of the map.

12) UTM grids are 1000 square meters.

13) Excel spread:
68 67 71 480 440 70 380 380 in the center of campus.
14) Magnetic declination is 14 degrees.

15) Water flows South in the intermitent stream between the 405 and the Stone Canyon Reservoir.

This is a map of the Metro in Paris. This map is from http://www.ecocompacity.org/Metropolis/%20metropolis.html. On this map, each color represents a different metro line except for the wider light blue line that runs through the map which is the Seine River. Interestingly, when looking at a map that represents mass transit like this one, the directions are not described in North, South, East, or West, but by the final destination on the line. For example, to go South on line 6, one is actually taking line 6 toward Place d'Italie.

This is a map of my favorite place: UCLA. This map came from UCLA's engineering department website, http://www.seas.ucla.edu/. This map includes the UCLA campus and the streets of Westwood. To the Norht-West are the dormotories. To the North-East is the area called "North Campus" where classes for the humanities, arts, and social sciences are held. South of there is South Campus which is home to any classes involving engineering, science, math, psychology, or medicine. In the central part of the map are the athletic fields and Pauley Pavillion, the basketball arena. To the West, just South of the dorms is the area of Westwood where most students who choose to live off campus find their apartments. Finally, in the Southern most area of the map is Westwood Village where UCLA students, faculty, and visitors go to shop, eat, and see movies.

This is a map of Antigua, Guatemala. I chose this map because I just spent my break in Guatemala between finals of Spring Quarter and the beginning of Summer Session A. This is a street map but includes some major tourist destinations such as churches, hotels, and bus stops. Also, toward the sides of the map, little hands point to places off the map such as Guatemala City. This map comes from http://www.larutamaya.net/. La Ruta Maya is a travel agency in Guatemala.
